BUS RIDES The bus ride on the way to PEEC was so much fun. It was a good opportunity to meet all the kids from Lavallette. I really enjoyed that chance to meet everyone. It was a good time to get to know each other before we actually got there. During the bus ride, I was very anxious to get to PEEC. I was really excited about the whole trip and I was even more excited once I met everyone. They were all so nice. On the bus ride home, we all talked about the whole trip. It included all the great memories we had throughout everything. By that time, I was more comfortable with all the kids from Lavallette so we were all joking around and just having a good time. I was sitting with mostly all Lavallette kids and I was sad to go once we got back to Bay Head without them.

TEAM BUILDING The team building activities were really exciting, and also challenging. Working together also helped everyone to get to know each other a little better. We all had a good sense of pride when we would finish an activity. It was fun hearing everyone’s ideas, and also coming up with our own. Some of these activities included trying to get everyone to stand on one small platform, climbing over a wall, getting everyone through a tire, crossing “bogs” and “canyons,” and crossing two platforms only with two pieces of wood. They were all amusing and everybody had a good time.

TWO-POND TRAIL The two-pond trail was a very interesting trail. It was full of great scenes, as well as fascinating wild life. The ponds were both very pretty and very worth seeing. On the way back, we took a different trail to get back to the cabins. The trees and plants were all different, and very cool looking. On the trail, we didn’t only learn about the ponds, but everything surrounding them too. It was one of my favorite trails throughout the trip.

CONFIDENCE COURSE The confidence courses were all so much fun. They included; walking across a wire only being able to hold on to some strings hanging from a tree, walking across a wire holding on to a rope attached between each tree, walking across swings that were hung to trees, walking across a log attached between two tree while it swung a little, and walking on a wire with somebody else, depending on them while you walked. All of those were a challenge to everyone, but they were still a good time. We had spotters for each one, so everybody helped each other. On some, you really had to test your balance to try not to fall or anything. My favorite was either walking across the swings, or walking across the log. We learned that you had to go very slowly and carefully, because with just one wrong move you could fall.

WILD LIFE The wild life study was very interesting. I never knew how many different animals were in the Poconos. One of them was the bat. The bats would often fly around, around the time of dusk, but we did not see any. The bats are continuously getting less and less because of the conditions in the trees and the air. Another thing that I found very interesting was the bullfrogs. The bullfrogs made very loud, deep noises, and it was even scary at times. While we were standing around a pond, we heard one, and it kept getting closer and closer, so the noises were getting louder and louder. It was very cool. Also, learning about the insects and other things in the ponds there was very absorbing.

BONFIRE The bonfire on the first night was also a good chance to get to know everybody. While there, we all talked, as well as ate s’mores. The guide explained a lot to us about the environment around the trail. It was fun going through the hike while it was dark, and hearing all the sounds of the night.

CANOEING I had a great time canoeing. I was in a group with Hailey, Veronica, and TJ. We all really had to work together to get far. With everyone in the large lake, we were all joking around, and bumping into each other. We were associating with the people in the other canoes. The lake was very pretty, and we also learned about wild life around the lake. I got a little wet from the paddles and such, but it was fun. Sitting in the middle, I didn’t have to steer…which was probably best for my group. Being in the open lake with friends really a good time.

ORIENTEERING While we were orienteering, we all got a good taste of finding our ways through the woods. I was in a group with Hailey and TJ, and it was more challenging then it seemed. We all had to get Red in the Shed and follow Fred or something, and it was easier said then done. We had to find a point that was hanging from a tree, and all we had was a compass, map, and ourselves. My group pretty much went to every single point BUT the one we were looking for. We were going all over the place, but really trying. It was a long walk and very hard work, but I think that it was worth it.

STREAM STUDY The stream study was very interesting. The walk there was a little long, but very scenic. Our guide told us about all the trees and plants that led to the beautiful stream we went to. The stream was very long, and wide, but not too wide to walk across. There was so much life in the water. There were little bugs in the water and little newts on the banks. My favorite was all the frogs we saw and caught. The frogs were cute and really cool to look at. So were the toads. My, as well as almost everyone’s’ shoes were soaking wet. We were all walking across the stream and trying to find things in the stream. It was something that I will never forget.

FOSSIL TRAIL The fossil trail was a very cool trail. The fossils were all information and showed a part of history. While we were walking, we found lots of little newts, and even named some. We all climbed up this big hill and took some pictures, too. Although we were all really tired, the trail was still fun. I also liked how we went as a whole and not in our groups so we got to spend time with everyone in both Lavallette and Bay Head.

ZELANKA The animal man, Zelanka, was so much fun. He had a great sense of humor, and I was laughing the whole time. When we first got to the building, he just had boxes and boxes stacked on the table, and we had no idea what was going to be in them. Some of the animals he brought included many snakes, birds, a baby alligator, bugs, lizards, bunnies, as well as so many more. I really liked the chinchilla; it was so soft, and really cute. I also liked the bunny. I learned a lot from Zelanka, a lot of things that I never knew about most animals. He taught us all of this in a very entertaining way, and it didn’t even feel like I was leaning. He called me up and put a huge snake around my waist. I was really scared, but I knew that this guy wouldn’t put me in any harm. We also learned about animal calls and things in the woods. The tarantulas and bugs grossed me out just a little, but it was okay. If I had the chance to, I would definitely do it again.

ASTRONOMY I learned a lot doing the astronomy activity. The first thing was did was all about the planets. We got into groups and had one big tub of play dough. We had to continuously break it up, and it showed the sizes of the planets. Jupiter and Saturn were huge, while other planets like Earth and Venus were teeny tiny. We kept having to break small pieces of the play dough into even smaller pieces, and it got a little hard. I never knew all the different sizes of the planets until then. We also did something about the stars. We each got a fact about the stars and then had to act it out, and we had a little contest. We learned about the cycle of the stars and how they grew and sometimes exploded. It was a lot of fun.

NIGHT HIKE The night hike was one of my favorite things in PEEC. We all learned things about nocturnal animals such as owls and raccoons. Our guide taught us about animal calls and more. We also all worked on our night visions with some cool tricks. We saw sparks with life savers, did a disappearing head trick, and learned about pirate eye patches. It was a lot of fun.

TUMBLING WATERS The trail going to tumbling waters was kind of long, but it was still fun. It was long, but 100% worth it. The waterfalls were beautiful, and I just wanted to stay there forever. Everyone was walking across the little stream, and most of us were getting wet. To cross, you either had to walk across a slippery log, or walk across rocks. It was a little challenging, but it was good once you got across. We were all taking pictures by the falls, and it was sooo great. The walk back was mostly up hill, but still good.

CABINS The cabins at PEEC were all really nice. It was once big building with a hallway that separated to the boys room and the girls room. It was really nice. The rooms were filled with bunk beds, and a bathroom. I was on a bunk that was next to Nicole, and above Trinity. We had a lot of fun times in the cabin, especially at night. We would all be talking, and it was amazing.

LAVALLETTE Everyone from Lavallette was really nice. We all got to know each other really fast, and we all got along. I knew almost everyone by the second day, and we could all make jokes and talk. Even the first night, I was sharing my bunk with a bunch of the Lavallette girls and talking to them about anything I could talk about with girls I’ve known for about my whole life. The boys were also really nice, and really funny too. I’m glad we got to go with the class that we did.
