The Bus Rides On the first bus ride with the Lavallette kids I was nervous. I wondered if anyone was going to like me. I didn’t have to worry though. The kids were being very friendly and of course after spending 3 days with the same people they tend to grow on you. I personally will never forget some of the people that I met. I was a bit reserved on the bus ride up but on the way back I was excited! The bus ride back was one of the most fun bus rides that I’ve ever been on. I knew everyone now and even though PEEC was fun, I was excited to be going home.

Teambuilding This course took cunning and imagination in order to complete. We had to put all of our feet on a platform that represents our “shrinking world”, go across a “bog” using only pieces of wood, fly across a “canyon” on “magic carpets”, help each other through the “Titanic’s” porthole, cross over to “islands” using a plank of wood, and help each other over a huge wall. We all had to work in order to get everyone over to the “other side”. This was very fun to do and we would sometimes just burst out laughing at the randomness of the tasks that we had to complete.

Two Ponds This was the first trail that we hiked on at PEEC. It was SUPPOSED to be kind of short and easy but Mr. Kennedy led us off on the wrong trail. We went up what seemed to be a huge mountain only to get to the top and find that we were late for dinner. We were starved! We climbed down the mountain and ate hungrily. We never got to see the Two Ponds Trail but getting ‘lost’ was pretty fun and it gave us plenty of stories to tell the other kids when we got back to campus!

Confidence This course was full of things to fall off of. We had to walk (or run) across a swinging log, walk across a wire with only another wire to support us, and walk across swings that were different heights above the ground. When we were done we had to spot everyone else across. There were definitely plenty of times to hurt yourself but thankfully no one did. We were all having a lot of fun building our ‘confidence’!

Wildlife We had a nocturnal wildlife study on our first night at PEEC. It started a little before dusk and ended when it was pitch black out. We were stumbling around the trails then suddenly we came to our cabin! That was a relief! On the Nocturnal study, we learned about bats, bears, frogs, fishes and raccoons. It was very interesting to learn about how animals marked their territories. I didn’t know that when bears are rubbing against trees they are actually marking their territories. I always thought that they were just scratching their backs! We also learned about a fungus that is killing a lot of bats. Otherwise that was it.

Bonfire We had a bonfire our first night. We hiked to a little clearing in the pitch-blackness. Some of us were somewhat scared and kept grabbing on to random people and then jumping back with endless choruses of “Whoops! Sorry!” We made s’mores with slightly burned marshmallows and were constantly trying to figure out who was who in the total darkness. It was pretty hard despite the bright bonfire.

Canoeing This activity left all of us very wet. We had about 4 people to each canoe and we would sometimes splash each other with our paddles. (By mistake of course!) I was in the back of the canoe with Hailey in the front, and Sydne and TJ in the middle. It was very fun! We also got rammed a couple of times by some of the boys from Lavallette because Hailey and Sydne were stealing their hats! Other than getting smashed between two canoes and having the danger of falling into the leech filled waters, canoeing was very fun!

Orienteering This event involved finding your way to different points on a map. We were given a compass, a map, and 2 or 3 partners. I was with 3 of the girls from Lavallette and we kind of got lost…twice! We also made a movie on one of our cameras. It was our little spoof on the Indiana Jones movies. We were last to get back from the point that we were assigned. We got back just in time to see everyone walking back to campus!

Stream Study We had to hike a little bit to get to the stream. Then we were put into groups of four or five. Our goal was to catch some stream animals like frogs, salamanders, newts, fish, and shrimp thingies. We caught some of those creatures and we also saw a flying squirrel at a bat house! It was so cute! We also caught a HUGE frog! Also even though I was wearing rain boots I still got my feet soaked! The stream study was so fun!

Fossil trail We took this trail to kill some time before dinner and after another thing that we did. We were all complaining about going because we were so tired. We climbed up a huge rock, all of us, and we took a picture. I nearly fell down the slope! We also saw a couple of fossils on the way. But, I was very happy to go back to dinner after walking all day!

Zelenka When I heard the teachers telling us that we were going to Zelenka I was a little bit confused. What the heck is Zelenka? Well it turns out that Zelenka was an assembly about animals. We had an elderly man teaching us about everything he knows about animals. It was very cool! He brought many animals like birds, snakes, rabbits, mice, turtles, bugs, and chinchillas to name a few. He also set the scene very well. He would say things like “don’t disturb the water” at random moments. He would also use a lot of volunteers, which was fun. Sydne and Bronson both got snakes wrapped around their wastes. You should have seen Sydne’s face!

Astronomy We had our astronomy course after Zelenka. We did two things involving astronomy with this course. We made scales of planets with play-dough. I didn’t know that Pluto was so small compared to the other planets! Then we learned about the life cycle of the star. We all had to read a fact on an index card ‘with feeling’. We all had some fun making things up! James (from Lavallette) read with feeling, Sydne acted like a teacher, Stefano rapped, Bronson read his in a weird accent, I did ballet and everyone else just read it in their normal voices. Then, our chaperones decided who had won. Sydne got fourth place, I got third, Bronson got second, and James got first. We also acted out an ancient Greek story that was used to explain the Big and Little dipper constellations. I was Hera the Queen of the gods!

Night Hike This was the activity that we had heard about the most. Mr. Kennedy had constantly said that we would have to walk a straight path in the pitch-blackness. We went in our groups on two different trails. Our group didn’t do the solo hike. Instead, we learned all about things that can give you light in the dark and how to improve our night vision and keep it. This hike was not what I had expected but I still had a good time!

Tumbling Waters This was the last hike that we took at PEEC. It was the same one that we mistakenly took our first day, only we came from a different direction this time! We hiked for about 45 minutes until we got to the waterfall. It was beautiful! We frolicked in the water for a little bit. I got my whole foot wet and I had to walk back with cold feet! I thought that I was wet but then Oriel fell in! Then we all went up on the top of the waterfall and took a memorable picture. But, then we had to walk uphill the rest of the way! That particular part was bad!

Cabins The cabins that we stayed in were new and comfortable! There were rows and rows of bunk beds! I got a top bunk and I had no one under me except my suitcase, which was nice! We all would talk to each other until it was lights out. The bathrooms were not awful thank goodness! It was also fun to have talks on other people’s beds. We also had a couple people fall off the beds. One girl named Danielle fell clean off Hailey’s top bunk bed and fell flat on her back! She was perfectly fine though! All that I can say is that we had a lot of fun in those cabins!

Food The food aspect of PEEC wasn’t so good. Aside from breakfast and the salad bar, I didn’t want to touch any of the food that they offered. I’m a vegetarian and most of the food options that they had were for carnivores. The meals were awful for almost everyone even people who liked to eat meat. My advice is that if you see something that you like eat a lot of it because you may not like anything else that is offered. You should have heard the discussions that we had about it after dinner!

Lavallette The kids from Lavallette were the best! We got along so nicely! The girls were fun to hang out with in our rooms and as I’ve said before, I was in stitches most of the time! The boys were pulling pranks on everyone and again they were fun to hang out with too! I made some friends that I will never forget EVER!!! I officially had a huge blast at PEEC!!
